So Shaun “the Bass Bugger” Taylor got married to my sister a couple weekends ago. They assured Alan “The Skip” and myself that the venue would be fishable, so we agreed to attend! I must say fly fishing in suits I can only describe as both surreal and liberating at the same time.
The venue was Mongena Game Lodge (45 Km north of Pretoria), and I must say it is the most beautiful wedding venue that I have ever been to. The small bass dam that we fished showed lots of potential, unfortunately the weather wasn’t playing its part and we struggled to figure out what the bass were looking for. We tried a number of large minnow imitating flies in black, purple, and green with no luck whatsoever. Although The Skip did manage to hook into a few fish which we suspect were barbell, which somehow managed to effectively unbutton themselves every time.
Below is a picture of my insanely understanding girlfriend, who by some miracle of God sticks around even with the all the fishing that I do. The next day at the dam was slightly more productive! i decided to abandon the fly rod and opt for more conventional bass fishing techniques. I got many STRONG takes from fish I suspect were in the region of 1 and 2 KG’s. the fish were taking natural coloured Zoom Super Flukes fished weightless right up against the light reeds on the edges of the dam. My colours of choice were watermelon red and madigras (watermelon with green gold and purple glitter). I still maintained that a weightless Super Fluke jerked gracefully around any form of structure is THE BEST farm dam lure out there.
I only managed to land one fish for the weekend unfortunately, but we will definitely be back to try our luck in the future. There is also apparently a larger dam at the venue that is home to fish with the 3 to 4 kilo range. Mongena arranges charters on a large bout at around R550 for 3 hours (for up to 16 people).
